France industrial production grew less than expected in June

Data published by INSEE showed that industrial production increased by 0.8% in June, partially offsetting the May drop (-2.2%, revised from -2.1%). Economists had expected production to grow by 1.0%. Meanwhile, manufacturing output also increased by 0.8% after falling by 2.7% in May.

INSEE said that output increased in the manufacture of transport equipment (+3.4% after -0.5%), in the “other manufacturing industries" (+0.5% after ‑3.5%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+12.3% after +4.3%) and in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+0.7% after +0.8%). On the contrary, it decreased again in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (‑1.1% after ‑4.8%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑0.3% after ‑0.5%).

Over the past three months (through June), industrial production fell by 1.2% per annum, while manufacturing production decreased by 1.4% per annum. Output in the manufacture of transport equipment and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods went down sharply (‑6.3% and ‑5.1% respectively). It decreased slightly in the manufacture of food products and beverages (‑0.4 %). On the contrary, it increased in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+2.7%), and more slightly in the “other manufacturing industries” (+0.2%).
