Eurozone’s consumer confidence unexpectedly deteriorates in August

The European Commission (EC) announced on Thursday its flash estimate showed the consumer confidence indicator for the Eurozone dropped by 0.4 percentage point to -13.4 in August from an unrevised -13.0 in the previous month. This was the first decrease in the index this year.

Economists had expected the index to rise to -12.6 early this month.

Considering the European Union (EU) as a whole, the consumer sentiment indicator slipped by 0.1 percentage point to -12.3 in August.

Given this month’s declines, both indicators remained below their long-term averages.
