According to the report from INSEE, in December, the consumer confidence indicator fell to 89 points, as expected, from 90 points in November. The latest reading was the lowest since December 2023. The index also remains below its long-term average (100 points).
INSEE said that the index, which evaluates the opinion of households about their future financial situation, fell by 1 point to -14 points. The index reflecting the opinion of households regarding their past financial situation remained unchanged (-23 points). The balance of opinion regarding the opportunity to make major purchases did not change and amounted to -30 points. Meanwhile, the index assessing the opinion of households regarding their current ability to save rose by 1 point, to 18 points. The balance of opinion related to their future ability to save increased by 1 point, to 12 points.
The data also showed that the households' opinion on past and future standard of living in France kept deteriorating. The balance of opinion related to future standard of living in France lost 4 points and the one related to past standard of living lost 3 points. Both balances remain well below their long-term averages.
