Data published by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) showed that in September the number of unemployed increased by 1,891 (+1.7% m/m), to 113,245. Compared to the same month of the previous year, unemployment increased by 22,419 (+24.7%). The unemployment rate rose by 0.1% compared to August, to 2.5%. Economists had expected the unemployment rate to remain unchanged.
The seasonally adjusted number of unemployed increased in September by 2,492 (+2.1%) to 119,310. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose by 0.1%, to 2.6%. From August to September, the number of youth unemployed (15- to 24-year-olds) increased by 52 people (+0.4%) to 11,957. Compared to the same month of the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 2,178 persons (+22.3%). The youth unemployment rate remained at 2.7% in September.
A total of 184,373 job seekers were registered in September, 4,137 people more than in the previous month (+2.3%). Compared to the same month of the previous year, this number increased by 30,838 people (+20.1%). The jobseeker ratio increased in September by 0.1%, to 4.0%.
