International Energy Agency (IEA) leaves the 2024 world oil demand growth forecast unchanged, but lowered its forecast for next year

  • IEA predicts that this year the growth of global oil demand will amount to 970 thousand barrels

  • Next year, global oil demand growth is now expected to reach 950 thousand barrels (-30 thousand barrels compared to the previous forecast).

  • Chinese oil demand has contracted for the third consecutive month and now weak growth in China is significantly dragging on global gains. But advanced economies, notably the US, where one-third of global gasoline is consumed, compensated for that loss.

  • The summer driving season in the US is set to be the strongest since the pandemic

  • OPEC+ cuts are tightening physical markets

  • For now, supply is struggling to keep pace with peak summer demand, tipping the market into a deficit
