Passenger car registrations in the European Union rose sharply in April

Data published by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) showed that in April, the number of registrations of new passenger cars in the European Union rose by 13.7% per year, to 913,995 units, after falling by 5.2% per year in March. This growth can be partly explained by the fact that there were two extra sales days compared to the same month last year, when Easter holidays fell in April.

The data also showed that the number of registrations of new passenger cars in Spain increased by 23.1% per annum. A significant increase was also recorded in Germany (+19.8% per annum), France (+10.9% per annum), and Italy (+7.7% per annum).

During the first four months of the year, new car registrations in the European Union increased by 6.6%, reaching 3,683,042 units. Solid growth was recorded in the region’s largest markets over the period, with Germany and Spain each seeing a 7.8% increase, followed by France (+7%) and Italy (+6.1%).

ACEA said that in April, the battery-electric car market share held steady at 11.9%. Overall, new battery-electric car sales surged by 14.8% to 108,552 units. Hybrid-electric cars share rose to 29.1% from 24.9% in April 2023. New registrations of hybrid-electric cars increased by 33.1%, to 265,992 units. Petrol car sales increased by 7.3% to 328,967. However, their market share declined to 36% from 38.1% in April 2023. Meanwhile, the diesel car market remained steady at around 118,000 units, accounting for nearly 13% of the market.
