Canada announced on Friday that domestic investors bought an unprecedented CAD35.61
billion of foreign securities in March. In the previous month, Canadian
investors acquired foreign securities for CAD24.16 billion.
According to the report, Canadians predominantly invested in foreign equities and investment
fund shares (CAD23.25 billion) and, to a lesser extent, in bonds (CAD12.84
billion).
Meanwhile, foreign
investors bought CAD14.37 billion in Canadian securities after divesting CAD4.28
billion in February. This marked the highest net inflow since June 2023.
As a result,
international transactions in securities generated a net outflow of funds of CAD21.24
billion from the Canadian economy in March.
For the first
quarter of 2024, the total outflow amounted to CAD27.94 billion.
