Data published by Eurostat showed that in January, the construction output remained unchanged after rising 0.8% in December (revised from -0.1%). Economists had expected a 0.2% increase. On a monthly basis, the volume of construction rose 0.2% after a 0.4% increase in December. Meanwhile, among the EU countries, the volume of construction fell by 0.2% m/m and increased by 0.2% per year.
In the euro area, compared with December 2024, production in construction increased by 0.9% for construction of buildings, but decreased by 1.0% for civil engineering and by 0.1% for specialized construction activities. In the EU, production in construction increased by 1.2% for construction of buildings, decreased by 2.8% for civil engineering and decreased by 0.1% for specialised construction activities.
Compared with January 2024, in the euro area, production in construction increased by 1.8% for construction of buildings and by 0.9% for civil engineering, but decreased by 0.3% for specialised construction activities. In the EU, production in construction increased by 1.5% for construction of buildings and by 0.9% for civil engineering, but decreased by 0.2% for specialised construction activities,
Among Member States for which data are available, the highest annual increases in production in construction were recorded in Slovenia (+10.7%), Slovakia (+8.5%) and Czechia (+8.4%). The largest decreases were observed in Hungary (-9.6%), France (-7.1%) and Sweden (-6.1%).
