EUR traded mixed against other major currencies in the European session on Thursday as investors awaited the announcement of the rate decision by the European Central Bank at 13:15 GMT.

The single European currency rose versus CHF, fell versus AUD and JPY, and changed little versus CAD, GBP and USD.

The ECB’s rate decision is to follow 50-basis-point rate decreases by the Bank of Canada (on Wednesday) and the Swiss National Bank (earlier today). Expectations are for the ECB to announce a less aggressive rate cut of 25 basis points following today’s meeting, the final one in 2024. The move would mark a fourth rate reduction by the European Central Bank this year, lowering its key deposit rate to 3.0%

Markets will scrutinize the ECB’s policy statement and the comments of its president Christine Lagarde for clues on the policymakers' views on the trajectory of the the Eurozone’s economic growth and inflation, as well as the impacts of Donald Trump’s economic agenda.
