Canada’s wholesale sales decrease less than anticipated in August

Statistics Canada informed on Tuesday that wholesale sales (excluding petroleum and oilseed and grain) fell 0.6 per cent m-o-m to CAD81.87 billion in August, following a downwardly revised 0.3 per cent m-o-m gain (from +0.4 per cent m-o-m) in July.

Economists had forecast a 1.1 per cent m-o-m plunge for August.

According to the report, sales reduced in five of the seven subsectors, led by farm product, excluding oilseed and grain (-5.1 per cent m-o-m), miscellaneous (-3.9 per cent m-o-m) and motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and accessories (-1.8 per cent m-o-m). Meanwhile, personal and household goods (+2.3 per cent m-o-m) and building materials and supplies (+0.2 per cent m-o-m) recorded increases in wholesale sales in August.

In y-o-y terms, wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain) declined 1.4 per cent in August.
