Description
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand carries out the regulation of the monetary policy mainly by manipulating the interest rate (Official cash rate, OCR). Official cash rate OCR is used to adjust interest rates on short-term loans. This may be due to the fact that namely the short-term rates have a profound effect on the level of business activity in the country, and therefore provide a reliable control over the development of inflationary processes in the economy. The basic interest rate is one of the most important mechanisms regulating the economy of the country. With decrease of the interest rates, the demand of commercial banks for the loans of the central bank increases. At the same time commercial bank reserves increases together with their ability to credit businesses and individuals. The bank interest for the loan also decreases. The offer of money supply in the country increases. Conversely, when it is necessary to reduce the economic activity by reducing the money supply in the country, the central bank raises the interest rate.
Effect of market
The market's reaction to the decision to change the interest rate is one of the strongest reactions. Increase of the interest rate renders support to the New Zealand dollar.
