Description
In order to execute its functions, such as prices stability and economic growth support in particular, the Swiss National Bank (SNB) applies its control of the short-term rates level. SNB fixes and supports the 1.00% range for three month’s LIBOR interest rate for Swiss franc. LIBOR - London Interbank Offered Rate is the rate of interest at which large banks offer to lend money to one another in the wholesale money markets in London. LIBOR rates are set for different time periods, by means of different credit instruments. LIBOR is announced in London at 11 o'clock daily and is calculated as an average figure of the last 10 sellers’ price indications. High rates decrease the consumer lending, thus stimulating the growth of savings and as a result slowing down economic development. Increased rates usually lead to capital inflow growth into the country and the national currency medium-term rise, however if the interest rates growth is not based on the fast economic growth it can lead to stagnation and negative influence on the currency in the long term prospects.
Effect of market
The market reaction towards the discount rate change is one of the strongest. The discount rate growth provides support to the Franc.
